this afternoon, 95 in concord. 88 in the napa valley. 85 in san jose. and about 76 degrees in san francisco. all right. time for a traffic check. for that we head to elizabeth. >> we'll show you our slowest spots around the bay area one of which is not a surprise to commuters who do it every day out of tracy and between the altamont pass. we'll show you sensors. it looks like it's the slowest now coming from tracy on 205 towards the 580 split until about north flynn. and that roadwork eastbound 580 through the livermore valley approaching portola still there scheduled until 6:00. bart trains everything is on time. in fact, all mass transit so far no delay. more overnight roadwork this time the eastbound lanes of 580 approaching castro coming into richmond but if you are heading on to the richmond/san rafael bridge, this is a live look at the toll plaza where traffic is still super light. back to you guys. breaking news. yet another plane may have gone missing. owner of air aler. ry says one of the planes carrying 110 passengers and six crew members went off radar 50

minutes after taking off from ber keena fast so. the plane was missing for hours before the news was made public. happening today raymond "shrimp boy" include is back in the court. anne makovec reports. >> reporter: good morning. this hearing is called a status conference. that is where lawyers basically report on the state of their cases. kind of a housekeeping deal. but with this case, you never know what we're going to hear today. this case involves these three men. state senator leland yee, chinatown kingpin raymond "shrimp boy" chow and former san francisco board of education president keith jackson, who is accused of being the middleman in some sordid deals. the trouble began in march when yee was arrested of accusations

of drug running, murder-for- hire and weapons sales. yee and jackson are on bail and working on plea deals behind the scenes possibly. >> the fact that they have been dribbling in and dribbling in, the characters who are being caught in the net they now are giving information trying to buy their way out. i would think there's probably going to be quite a number of other people still to come. >> reporter: raymond "shrimp boy" chow is still in jail. he hasn't been granted jail. the lawyer may push for that today. today's hearing starts here in federal court at 10 a.m. live in san francisco, anne makovec, kpix 5. >> lee is still a state senator but he is suspended. oakland police are investigating what led to the electrocution of a man near the old pacific pipe factory in west oakland. it happened just before 9:00 last night. police and fire responded to a report of a man with electrical burns. he died at the scene.

the factory has been abandoned for years. the death penalty is under scrutiny after a lethal injection went wrong in arizona. joseph rudolph wood was executed yesterday for the 1989 murders of his estranged girlfriend and her father. wood died two hours after the execution began. some witnesses say he was gasping for air much of the time. relatives of wood's victims say people should not forget the crimes he committed. >> you know, this man -- he conducted a horrifying murder! and you guys are going, oh, let's worry about the drug and how he is affected. >> arizona governor jan brewer ordered a review of the state's lethal injection system. more passenger remains are expected to arrive in the netherlands today. cbs news reporter susan mcginnis reports. reporter: military planes in eastern ukraine took off for the netherlands once again carrying the remains of more

victims of malaysia airlines flight 17. yesterday 40 plain wooden coffins were flown there and a convoy of hearses carried the bodies to a dutch facility where forensic experts worked to identify them. malaysia's prime minister signed a book of condolences in his country today and said it will take a while for victims to make their final journey home. >> it is just expected that this whole process will take weeks, might even be months. we are not sure yet. >> reporter: a week after the incident, international investigators continue to find human remains as they comb through the massive crash area. among evidence they have uncovered, signs the wreckage was tampered with and proof the jet was indeed shot down. >> some. materials we saw and that we have photographed, uhm, feature significant puncture marks to the fuselage almost a piercing mark. >> reporter: senior u.s. officials believe russian

backed separatists in eastern ukraine hit the passenger plane with a surface-to-air missile. british officials are studying the plane's flight data recorders to try to find out what happened in the final moments of the doomed flight. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. >> meanwhile flights from the united states are now arriving once again in tel aviv's airport after the faa lifted its ban there. the secretary of state john kerry here is back in egypt to continue efforts to broker a cease-fire between israel and hamas. kerry says there has been some progress in the last 24 hours but the fighting continues as israeli tanks and planes pounded the gaza strip once again today. happening today, new restrictions on ecigarettes take effect in parts of santa clara county. kpix 5's kiet do joins us live from the county building to explain what ecig enthusiasts can and cannot do. kiet. >> reporter: good morning. i'm holding one of these ecigarettes now. it's made out of metal with a rechargeable battery. it looks and feels like a real

cigarette and county is doing its best to snuff these devices out. starting today, buying and using them just got a little bit tougher. sales of ecigarettes are now restricted near schools and using them is now banned in the common areas of multi-unit residences. this only applies to unincorporated parts of santa clara county. the county says the ecigarettes emit toxic chemicals, leads to increased nicotine use and sends the wrong message that smoking is okay. also, the cdc found in recent years that more and more high school kids have been smoking these devices also known as "vaping." >> there is no reason to have a bubblegum, watermelon ecigarette. it's the 31 flavors of getting kids addicted to nicotine. >> reporter: so this new law is on top of the other new law that they passed back in march which bans the use of ecigarettes right here on county property. michelle? >> kiet, how many retailers is this expected to affect? >> reporter: so we're talking about a kind of a small slice

of the pie here. there are only 24 places that sell tobacco products in unincorporated santa clara county. out of those 24, only 9 sell ecigarettes so santa clara county is on the edge of health laws here. they did the same thing with fast food laws. they are doing the same thing now with ecigarettes. live in san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. >> 5:08. san francisco elected officials can no longer have romantic relationships with people they oversee and keep is secret. the employee handbook will require elected officials to report affairs. the change comes after revelations that this man, supervisor john avalos, had an affair with his legislative aide. she is now on unpaid leave from her $95,000 a year position. time now 5:08. cameras are rolling when an armed carjacker goes on a wild crime spree putting drivers in serious danger. see how it ends after the

mountains outside of denver. it started when a deputy pu a man and woman over new this morning some video from a crime spree in the mountains outside of denver. it started when a deputy pulled a couple over in traffic. they took off and started a series of carjackings here. along the way the man stole an suv by blasting through a garage door there and at one point at least one shot was fired. our deputies did fire at the suspects. i cannot confirm whether the suspect fired at us. >> the woman was arrested first and a motor signing the officer caught the man on i-70. a driver pulled the suspected and held him down until he could be taken to jail. quite a day outside of denver. a teen pilot trying to set a record upon an around-the- world flight has died in a plane crash. a facebook page is set up for

17-year-old haris suleman from indiana. the teen's father also on board. rescue crews are trying to find that body. no word on what happened. let's get a check on the roads right now. >> overnight roadwork is cleared in the maze westbound 80 to eastbound 580. so if you are heading to the bay bridge itself trying to get into san francisco, so far it looks like this. you can see it's clear in the cash lanes and the fastrak ones. again, i always say, give it another half-hour and this camera will look different. so if you need to get to san francisco and don't want to wait in traffic, you can head out now. it's clear on the approaches. 18 minutes on westbound 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze. oakland all clear especially now that they cleared that overnight roadwork coming into downtown. and the oakland a's are playing the astros at 12:45 at o.co so a midday game you could see

midday traffic tie-ups, as well. this is a live look near the oakland coliseum. taillights are southbound into hayward on the approach to 238. it looks great down to the san mateo bridge. clear on the span westbound 92 from industrial to westbound to foster city and the peninsula. eastbound traffic still looks okay over the high-rise. that accident should be clear now. it was eastbound 84 midspan across the dumbarton bridge. no delays out of menlo park. westbound 580 the commute has begun through the altamont pass, the livermore valley. usually it's the first spot to slow down. once you hit the dublin interchange, though, all these headlights obviously a lot of commuters out there but we are not seeing any delay from hacienda to 680. 205 to the mountain house parkway and sluggish to vasco so the drive time has ticked up by a few minutes. bart all trains on time systemwide. if you are about to hit the

roads, remember kcbs when you hit the roads at 106.9 fm or 740-am. with the forecast, here's lawrence. hot in spots as temperatures soar and high pressure builds in again out of the desert southwest. out the door we go. we have patchy fog this morning along the coastline, some of that a little dense along skyline boulevard. otherwise, a few patches lingering inside the bay. but by the afternoon, becoming mostly sunny and hot in some of the interior valleys. warm inside the bay. and more sunshine on the way. maybe some triple-digit heat in the next couple of days. even today we'll be running above the average, usually 60s and 70s into san francisco and oakland. today, you're about 76 degrees, 9 degrees above average in san francisco. 11 degrees above the average and 81 in oakland. about 85 in san jose. and 95 in livermore. high pressure now building in out of the desert southwest.

it's been the same scenario in july. it will continue to crank up maybe some of the monsoonal clouds roll back into the bay area late in the weekend. 99 fresno today, 97 yosemite national park, patchy fog along the coastline then a whole lot of sunshine. nice at the beaches. fog returns late tonight and early tomorrow morning. temperatures out along the coastline: >> next couple of days triple digits, monsoonal clouds rolling in sunday into monday, maybe slight cooling into the middle of next week. so here comes the heat the next few days. >> 100 degrees? >> it's going to be hot everywhere >> thank you.

well, kids love summer camp because there's nothing like getting outside in the fresh air even when it's hot. >> that's true. that's true. but there are a few kids that would rather give up the sunshine for a week inside the kitchen. it's the cooking camps in the town of dublin and it's this week's "cool school." >> reporter: there's something cooking in dublin. what is the secret to the perfect croissant? >> i don't know. [ laughter ] >> reporter: well, nine tri- valley tweens and teens are about to find out. these young bakers-to-be will spend a week in the kitchen rolling the dough and perfecting recipes from homemade breads to cookies. so what's the best part? >> the finished product. getting to start it from nothing and getting to make it and something amazing. >> reporter: and then getting to eat it. >> best part. >> reporter: day one is croissant 101. the key ingredient, lots of butter. for three hours a day, these kids will measure together, roll together, and create some yummy treats. the baking part is the bonus. it's the team work and

camaraderie these youngsters take home, that's the main course. >> i think the most fun is like with all my friends and then we get to cook together and we get to learn a few more tips and stuff like that. >> reporter: kim billingslea has been teaching the advanced bakers for 7 years. once a tech worker, now one happy baker. >> i hope they can go home and do some work in the kitchen. and usually they do. they have a great time. >> reporter: attention, parents! there is a baking bonus here. cooking has a not so popular stepsister. these little bakers are getting a crash course on that, too. i bet your parents love this the most. you guys are learning how to wash dishes. >> yeah. >> reporter: how do you feel about that? >> oh, if you cook, you have to clean up after yourself. >> reporter: you need to learn it all. and by the way, what's the secret to a perfect croissant? >> to get the perfect flakiness. >> of course you do. >> so did you taste it? >> we couldn't stay there that

that? >> uhm, i saw in her eyes, you know, that she was scared and that, uhm, this is going to be it. >> reporter: janie martinez is one of the last people to see misty holt singh alive. >> she didn't want to go. misty was crying because she was saying, her daughter was alone in the car. she says, i don't want my daughter to see me coming out with you. and they said, don't worry, nothing's going to happen. and they took her anyway. >> reporter: martinez was inside the bank when the three armed robbers ran inside. >> and they had guns. and then it was happening so fast, that they had the security guard -- when they found out that the police officers were there, they said, we're going to take hostages. >> reporter: they said that? >> yes. >> reporter: they used those words? >> yes. >> reporter: how did they determine who they would take? >> whoever -- i don't know. they just grabbed misty and the bank teller had the -- the manager had her keys and

bail. he has tried unsuccessfully to do that several times. today is going to be a status conference. so it's kind of a housekeeping exercise. you don't know what you're going to hear with this case. it involves these three men that you see there on your screen, among more than a couple of dozen others. state senator leland yee, chinatown kingpin raymond "shrimp boy" chow and former san francisco board of education president keith jackson, accused of being the middleman in sordid deals. the trouble began in march when yee was arrested as part of an undercover sting investigation into chinatown gangs with accusations every drug running, murder-for-hire and weapons sales. yee and jackson are out on bail. >> the government created the crime. the government financed the crime. and the government ensnared my client. >> reporter: and that's tony serra the lawyer for raymond "shrimp boy" chow. again, he will likely try to

in the valleys. clara freeway. >> it is traffic time. for that we head to elizabeth. >> and we'll start with a look at the richmond/san rafael bridge. they cleared that overnight roadwork. there was some on westbound 580 in richmond past castro street. all that is gone. slight delays a little bit there at the richmond/san rafael bridge toll plaza. you can see a couple of trucks, a couple of big rigs waiting in line. otherwise the south bay, northbound 101 just a few minutes ago we were seeing a little slowing on the julian/mckee approach in the northbound lanes. looks like that's clear. so yeah, not a yellow sensor to be found in the south bay. 101 clear from morgan hill, 280 and the guadalupe parkway still clocking problem-free and no delay right now through downtown san jose. and if you are a silicon valley driver, we'll show you a quick look at milpitas where things look great there, as well. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you. >> thank you. new this morning, deadly crash on a santa clara freeway. one man was killed and another now has life-threatening

injuries from the accident just before midnight this morning. an older model corvette convertible failed to make the turn getting on a northbound highway 101 from the great america parkway. >> based on eyewitnesses, uhm, that observed the collision, sounded like they overturned four or five times and went across the road on the roof. >> chp says speed was likely a factor in the crash. northbound 101 was closed for nearly three hours. a $15 million settlement is expected in the case of a san francisco city truck killing a woman until a bernal heights park. the recreation and park commission recommends approval of the settlement. a woman sitting in holly park last september was run over by a parks department truck. the driver is going on trial for vehicular manslaughter. happening today, it's suddenly a little more difficult to use ecigarettes in parts of santa clara county. kpix 5's kiet do is live at the county building to explain the

new restrictions. kiet. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. we are standing right here on county property and lighting up this ecigarette would be illegal. they are become increasingly taboo here in santa clara county. starting today, the sales of ecigarettes are restricted near schools and using them is banned in the common areas of multiunion residences. this only applies to inincorporated parts of santa clara county. the fda doesn't regulate them and there are few laws on the books at the state level. doctors say they emit toxic chemicals because they contain nicotine. >> bottom line, we don't know what we don't know about nicotine exposure from these new products. all i know is that this is something that i hope my children never get into. >> reporter: so the cdc found in 2012 about 10% of high school students had tried an ecigarette. that is double the rate of what it was the previous year. so the county saw those numbers, saw a disturbing trend and tried to get ahead of it as

best they could. >> kiet, county officials also said they were trying to protect social norms. what's that? >> reporter: so basically right now, everyone sees smoking as bad. they kind of look down on it. when you use an ecigarette, somebody will say it's safe. they think that sends the wrong message and goes in the wrong direction of that social norm. live here at the county building in san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. airplanes to and from the united states are now using tel aviv's airport again today. the faa lifted its flight ban after getting word about israeli security measures for the airport. the ban was in place for more than a day following a hamas rocket strike near the airport tuesday. secretary of state john kerry back in egypt now after talks in israel and the west bank. >> i can tell you that we have in the last 24 hours made some progress in moving towards that goal. >> however, israeli tanks and warplanes are hitting the gaza

strip again today. 750 people have been killed since it started on july 8. most of them have been palestinian civilians. more bodies from the malaysia plane crash are expected to arrive in the netherlands today. 40 plain wooden coffins were flown there yesterday in a convoy of hearses carried all the remains to a dutch facility where forensic experts will now identify the victims. in the meantime, there is a push by the australian government to secure that crash site. pro-russian separatists are accused of preventing access to the area. tough times for general motors. the automaker announced its 2nd quarter profits fell 85% with expenses from all the recalls cutting can $1.5 billion from the bottom line. they posted a net profit of $190 million compared with 1.26 billion a year earlier. so far this year, gm has recalled almost 30 million vehicles and that by the way is a company record. the gm report may not be good news for wall street. but a bay area company is

setting the market on fire. >> it's true. cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger says facebook is poised to reach record highs. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. boy, facebook is lightening up the day. they reported earnings after the close last night. and a huge gain in their mobile ad revenue. that was the part of the company that people were doubting when the company first went public. they are trading up about 9 to 10% in the premarket as a result. it looks like we are going to get to about 78 bucks a share for facebook. remember that botched opening traded down to 20 bucks, now to be at 78 mark zuckerberg has to be a very happy man this morning. >> thank you. 5:39. a fire shuts down a popular ride at a bay area theme park putting more than guests at risk. after the break, what investigators say caused it. >> and it's a complaint that

the park yesterday sent embs into thrilla gorilla ride at six flags vallejo won't be up and running today. the grass fire near the park yesterday sent embers into the air and landed on the ride's rooftop starting a small fire. six flags moved some of the animals out of the area to be safe. a southwest airlines passenger sent a tweet about a ticket agent. it got him kicked off the flight. cate caugiran reports his tweet

had to be deleted before he could fly home with his two sons. >> i was left, you know, very upset, uhm, very embarrassed. >> reporter: duff watson tried to get on a southwest flight from denver to minneapolis. he is an "a" list passenger meaning he gets priority boarding. but a gate agent wouldn't let his 9-year-old and 6-year-olds board with him so he had to wait. >> i said, you know, real nice way to treat, you know, an "a" list meeting i'll be sure to tweet about it. >> reporter: and he did. >> something to the effect of, wow, you know, rudest agent in denver, you know, kimberly, gate c39. not happy, you know, you know, at southwest airlines. >> reporter: get this. she saw the tweet, so after the family boarded that same gate agent asked them to get off. she told duff she was threatened by the tweet and forced him to delete it. bay area travelers taking duff's side. >> i certainly don't think an airline should blackmail its customers. >> reporter: but some understand where the agent is coming from. >> it's a very stressful job

that these people have to go through dealing with the general public. >> reporter: i asked southwest what rule allows a gate agent to do this? >> a spokesman said the decision wasn't solely based off of a tweet. when there's a disagreement on the ground, our people use discretion to discuss matters away from other customers. and it should not go without saying again the family traveled aboard their intended flight what did southwest do? they gave duff and his children $50 vouchers each but duff says he is never flying southwest again. cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> southwest told cate it is an active social media member and likes to interact with its customers. the airline also says it has no intent to stifle their comments. >> guess he is changing airlines. 5:44. a check of traffic now with liz. what's going on. we'll go out to the bay bridge where we often go at this time of the morning. this is right around now that they turn on the metering lights. they are not on yet though so here's a live look. you can see the delays really beginning to grow now in the cash lanes. and i'm kind of surprised they haven't switched on the

metering lights yet quite frankly because the delays are already backing up beyond that first overcrossing. and it looks pretty good so far actually on our sensors from the incline into san francisco and on the skyway. kcbs mobile units were on the skyway recently and everything is clear straight down to 101. here's 101 across the golden gate bridge. and out of marin county, no delay. here's the drive times between san rafael and the golden gate bridge toll plaza. they did these lane changes here early. they have four in the southbound direction, two going northbound. anyway, you can see both directions of traffic flowing nicely if you are hopping on to doyle drive. westbound 580 the heaviest traffic now tracy to north livermore avenue definitely and you can see 25 miles per hour as you approach vasco. so just your usual stuff through there. and highway 4 kind of -- once again our heaviest drive times are often at this time of the morning anyway and right now it's the busiest between "a" street and lone tree.

there this afternoon, i think becoming mostly sunny. looks like temperatures getting hot in some of the valleys. boy, it looks like getting very hot the next few days, maybe some triple-digit heat returning to some of the interior valleys. today we are going to see these numbers running well above average. usually about 66 in san francisco. today about 10 degrees above averager so at 76 degrees. 11 degrees above the average at 81 in oakland. about 95 degrees in livermore. looks like these temperatures only going to get warmer over the next couple of days. so high pressure again building in out of the desert southwest back into the bay area. it's been that same type of scenario really the better part of july, looks like again we'll see the desert heat working its way toward the coast. temperatures in the 90s in the central valley for today as high as 99 in fresno 81 and sunny in lake tahoe about 64 degrees and sunny in the monterey bay. temperatures around our bay today starting to warm up quite a bit about 89 in los gatos, 92 in morgan hill. 85 in san jose. temperatures in the east bay running in the mid-90s in

>> reporter: the seriousness of the drought means many are keeping an eye out for water waste. >> i noticed it and if i think they do it more than once i'd probably say something. >> reporter: the hashtag drought shaming is viral on social media with people posting pictures of raging sprinklers and other water misuse. >> we have seen an uptick in people's reports about water waste around the community. >> reporter: contra costa water is getting flooded with complaints. more than a dozen a day on average, voicemails like this one. >> yesterday at 10:30, they had water going all over the place which obviously is a violation. >> they're watering over here, see? >> reporter: you never know when you'll come across potential wasted water. like today when we were at walnut creek's walden park doing an interview and saw the sprinklers come on running in the middle of the day creating puddles and watering the sidewalk. a city worker turned off the water when he saw our camera. off camera he said the sprinklers were broken last week and he was making sure they worked. >> they should be really
